I Love You (2019)

Performance art, handwritten on 18 plates

Duration: 3 min 57 s

I love you takes its title from words rarely spoken plainly within families, and instead delivered sideways - through concern, correction, expectation, sacrifice. The performance examines the contradiction at the heart of tough love: the way affection can become entangled with discipline, and discipline with violence, until it becomes difficult to locate where one ends and the other begins.

Content warning: Loud sounds; breaking ceramic objects; themes of familial conflict, parental expectations, and emotional distress.
